Named Bursaries

OMSBF Named Bursaries are $2,000 bursaries established by an individual or group to commemorate a physician’s achievements, in memory of a colleague or relative, to support a student pursuing a specific specialty, or from a certain area of the province. STUDENTS MUST APPLY FOR THESE BURSARIES.

OMSBF is offering 26 Named Bursaries this year (2016 – 2017). Applicants can apply for an unlimited number of Named Bursaries provided they meet the required criteria. Applicants that best satisfy the established criteria and demonstrate the greatest financial need will be selected as bursary recipients.

Residents or high school grads of Burlington


Established by:
Joseph Brant physicians/Burlington Medical Society partnered with the Burlington Community Foundation

Application Criteria:

  • A current resident or high school graduate of Burlington

Resident or high school grads of District 4 who have an intention to practice in District 4.


Established by:

Dr. Garnet Maley and Dr. Ian MacMillan of District 4, Physicians Care

Application Criteria:

  • A current resident or high school graduate of District 4

Second or third year medical students at University of Toronto


Established by:

OMA District 11 to help encourage second and third year medical students to pursue their studies.

Application Criteria:

  • A second or third year medical student attending the University of Toronto.
  • In good academic standing: Submit letter from University or (academic standing form)

Medical students attending the University of Western Ontario


Established by:

In honour of the late Dr. Adam Linton using funds from the Adam Linton Memorial Fund.

Application Criteria:

  • A medical student attending the Western University.

 

Medical students attending the University of Windsor Campus full-time that demonstrates interest in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.


Established by:

The Essex County Medical Society.

Application Criteria:

  • A medical student attending the University of Windsor Campus full time.
  • Shows an interest in obstetrics and gynecology.
  • Maintains activities and interests outside the field of medicine.
  • Shows a compassionate and giving spirit.

Medical students in their final year of study and plan to pursue Family Medicine.


Established by:

The Estate of the late Doris C. Boes in honour of Dr. Arlene MacIntyre for her compassionate care to her patients.

Application Criteria:

  • Has a plan to pursue family medicine (provide brief description of plan in cover letter).
  • In their final year of study.

Residents, high school grads, and medical students attending the University of Ottawa


Established by:

Academy of Medicine Ottawa in memory of the late Dr. Christina Hill.

Application Criteria:

  • A medical student attending the University of Ottawa.
  • A current resident or high school graduate of Ottawa.

Awarded at the discretion of the Ontario Medical Student Bursary Fund


Established by:

Through the Canadian Medical Foundation in honour of the late Dr. Csaba Vargha.

Application Criteria:

  • To be awarded at the discretion of the Ontario Medical Student Bursary Fund

Residents or high school grads of Sault Ste. Marie.


Established by:

Algoma West Academy of Medicine in memory of the late Dr. Gilbert Hopson.

Application Criteria:

  • A current resident or high school graduate of Sault Ste. Marie.

 

Medical Students attending the University of Windsor campus full time who demonstrate high academic standard and social conscience


Established by:

Essex County Medical Society.

Application Criteria:

  • A medical student attending the University of Windsor Campus full time
  • A student who demonstrates high academic standard as well as a social conscience through volunteer or charitable work.
  • In good academic standing: Submit letter from University or (academic standing form)

Medical Students from Sault Ste. Marie or Algoma attending NOSM


Established by:

Algoma West Academy of Medicine in memory of the late Dr. Hui Lee.

Application Criteria:

  • A student from Sault St. Marie or Algoma attending the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.

Medical students attending the University of Windsor campus fill time who are interested in urology or surgical specialty


Established by:

Essex County Medical Society in memory of Dr. Richard Boyd who enjoyed running and golf.

Application Criteria:

  • A medical student attending the University of Windsor Campus full time.
  • Shows an interest in urology or surgical specialty.
  • Maintains activities and interests outside the field of medicine.
  • Shows a compassionate and giving spirit.

Medical students in their final year of study who plan to pursue Family Medicine


Established by:

The family of the late Arnold A. Boes in honour of his family physician, Dr. Ronald Twiddy.

Application Criteria:

  • Has the intention of practising family medicine (provide brief description of plan in cover letter)
  • In their final year of study

Medical students from Northeastern Ontario who are attending NOSM.


Established by:

In memory of Dr. Stephen J. Kosar to assist financially challenged medical students.

Application Criteria:

  • A current medical student from Northeastern Ontario
    (Algoma District, Cochrane District, Manitoulin District, Sudbury District, Timiskaming District, or the single-tier municipality of Greater Sudbury).
  • Attending the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.

Residents or highschool grads of the Region of Durham with the intention of practising medicine in the region of Durham


Established by:

Durham Medical Society to assist financially challenged medical students.

Application Criteria:

  • A current resident or high school graduate of the Region of Durham.
  • Has the intention of practising medicine in the Region of Durham
    (provide brief description of plan in cover letter).test

Female medical student originating from the Ottawa Valley.


Established by:

Dr. Virginia Walley in honour of her parents, John and Margaret Walley.

Application Criteria:

  • A female medical student.
  • Originating from the Ottawa Valley
    (Arnprior, Deep River, Mattawa, Ottawa, Petawawa, Pembroke, Renfrew, Rockland, L’Orignal, Hawkesbury, or Rigaud) or Northern Ontario (Dryden, Elliot Lake, Greater Sudbury, Kenora, North Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Temiskaming Shores, Thunder Bay, or Timmins).

Medical students attending the Michael DeGroote School of Medicine at the Kitchener Campus with the intention of practising medicine in Waterloo Region

Application Criteria:

  • A medical student attending the Michael DeGroote School of Medicine at the Kitchener Campus has the intention of practising medicine in Waterloo Region.

Awarded at the discretion of the Ontario Medical Student Bursary Fund.

Dr. Glenn Sawyer in memory of his late wife Meta.

Application Criteria:

  • To be awarded at the discretion of the Ontario Medical Student Bursary Fund

Medical students attending NOSM who are also a resident in the Nipissing District.


Established by:

Dr. Steven Bodley and Dr. David Dellandrea on behalf of the North Bay & District Medical Society.

Application Criteria:

  • A medical student attending the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.
  • A current resident in the Nipissing District.

Medical students in their final year of study who can demonstrate fiscal responsibility, consistent leadership and work to further medical student interests


Established by:

A group of Ontario medical students during the 2005 Ontario Medical Students Weekend (OMSW) where surplus funds were donated to OMSBF.

Application Criteria:

  • A medical student in their final year of study
  • Must demonstrate fiscal responsibility
  • Must show consistent leadership and significant executive involvement in committees and medical-related associations to further medical student interests (provide supporting documents, such as C.V.’s, or any other documents regarding committee involvement)

Female Ontario medical students originating from Manitoba.


Established by:

The late Dr. George Edward Yee in memory of his late mother, Pauline Yee Harrison.

Application Criteria:

  • A female Ontario medical student
  • Originating from Manitoba (either born or resident for at least 10 years)

Established by:

SDMS for a medical student attending the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.

Application Criteria:

  • A medical student attending the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.

Medical students who can demonstrate academic excellence


Established by:

Sun Life Financial to assist financially challenged medical students.

Application Criteria:

  • Achieving academic excellence (provide supporting documentation)
  • In good academic standing: Submit letter from University or (academic standing form)

Medical students attending the University of Windsor Campus.


Established by:

The Essex County Medical Society.

Application Criteria:

  • A medical student attending the University of Windsor Campus full time.

University of Windsor graduates attending the University of Windsor Campus


Established by:

The late Mr. Joe Vijuk of Chicago, Illinois in honour of Dr. Walter J. Cassidy.

Application Criteria:

  • A University of Windsor graduate accepted into, or attending, Western University satellite medical school at the University of Windsor.
  • Demonstrates academic merit: Submit letter from University or (academic standing form.)
  • A 500-word essay on: “The relationship of the mind and body to health.”
